Aging and Elderly Women

Description: The Ministry began on February 19, 2005 as members of the Sylvia Allen/Inolia Williams Circle visited Independence Court, a senior residence in Hyattsville, MD. There were 25 residents in attendance at the time and the missionaries were delighted to share their love of God and bring words of encouragement to them. The service was “spirit-filled” and the Circle members were all privileged to share such faith filled service at Independence Court. Anyone wishing to share in this ministry is invited to contact the Ministry Leader, Sister Patricia Martin, at any time.

Evangelism Street

Description: This ministry was initiated by the Laymen’s League after receiving training from Rev. Childs at Berean Baptist Church. Their mission is to provide evangelistic outreach to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to unsaved and/or unchurched souls, mainly in the Shaw community. Expansion will include reaching and strengthening men of the families within our church.

On July 10, 2004 the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., held its “Day of Deliverance,” a one-hour evangelism initiative for the entire eastern region of the United States. After several training session, many members of the church family joined the Laymen as they put Street Evangelism into action. Pastor Raymond Bell, Rev. Lucy Horne and Deacon Prince Jones provided training to church members desirous of supporting the effort. Using resources such as the Four Spiritual Laws, bookmarks, door-to-door flyers and Youth Weekend (July 24) flyers, members armed themselves to spread the Word. The day kicked off with the participants gathering for prayer. Rev. Bell, the police, the band and teams of church members walked or rode to Gibson Plaza at 7th & O streets, NW where there was preaching, singing and materials distribution. Some teams ventured out to neighboring homes where they left pamphlets detailing the Good News about Jesus. Overall, the response was good – souls were ministered to and saved, others revived in the Lord. Records collected were turned over for follow up in determining the needs of persons touched that day. To God Be the Glory for the good things He has done! First Rising Mt. Zion responded with the joy of Jesus Christ. On one accord, headed toward the purpose of the church for the Great Commission that Jesus commanded of His disciples, the ministry will involve the entire church family in evangelistic outreach for the 2005 Day of Deliverance.

Helping Hands

Description: The “Helping Hands” Food Distribution Ministry was born out of the vision for a Church Alive. Sister Jean Whitley met with Pastor Bell to discuss plans for re-establishing a food distribution program at First Rising Mt. Zion. Volunteers were recruited and they attended formal orientation at the Capital Area Food Bank.

The Food Distribution Ministry officially began meeting in October 2003. Pastor Bell was named Executive Director, Sister Jean Whitley, Director of Agency Relations and Sister Barbara Jordan, Program Director. On October 21, 2003, the ministry officially adopted the name “Helping Hands” at the suggestion of Deaconess Virginia Logan. The ministry began making emergency food distributions to those in need. For Thanksgiving, the ministry was able to provide over one hundred families with a turkey and the makings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Today, “Helping Hands” continues to distribute food to needy families. In partnership with the council of churches of Greater Washington, there are presently 163 families registered to receive food every other week. These families cross the spectrum of need and include individuals from the Community of Hope, a program for families transitioning from temporary to permanent housing and permanent employment; the Strong Families Program, a family self-sufficiency program; New Endeavors for Women; and the House of Ruth. With the help of the Lord Almighty, “Helping Hands” will realize its goal of regular distribution to 200 families by the end of 2005.

The Homeless and Addictions Ministry will also strive to under gird other ministries with the same target population, by sharing its database and other resources

Monthly Faith Luncheon

Description: February 7, 2005 marked the first anniversary of the Monthly Faith Luncheon. This ministry continues to bring hope and faith to those we serve in nursing homes, healthcare centers and the AIDs ministry. The mission and purpose is to present an atmosphere of family time while sharing a message of hope. Last year, the ministry served lunch and provided love gifts to an average of 58 people per month. Each guest was made to feel special and everyone has been excited with the way our special guests have participated in the worship services.

The Faith Luncheon Worship program has been carried to the Heartland Health Care Center of Adelphi, Maryland, Carroll Manor Nursing Home, Northwest Downtown Cluster Seniors and the Center for Enrichment. Numerous missionaries have participated in serving and socializing with our guests. It has been a hallelujah fellowship time! It has increased our faith in servant hood and contributed to the spiritual growth of our volunteers.

As we prepare to serve in Nursing Homes as volunteers, three members have attended Volunteer Training at Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home. Classes were given in Fire Safety and Disaster Planning, Resident Abuse, blood born pathogens and “mission confidential.” Participants received a handbook of volunteer opportunities at Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home. The training and information provided is excellent reference material for all individuals desirous of volunteering in the health care field.

Many thanks to our Pastor and all of the faithful and dedicated members of the Monthly Faith Luncheon Missionary Ministry and the First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church. We are looking forward to another year of humble service. Anyone looking for another branch of serving Christ are encouraged to join us. “For we do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."

Mt. Carmel House Ministry

Description:  In March 2003, the Solid Rock Circle began to feed women at the Mt. Carmel House, a residence for displaced/recovering women. Each fourth Saturday of the month, the twenty or more housed women under a two-year program are provided with a complete full course home-cooked meal. After the residents are fed, an invitation to other persons desiring a meal is extended. Often persons line the streets, as many as forty to sixty persons looking to be fed.

Members of the ministry use their own personal funds to buy the food, believing that the Spirit of the Lord is moving within them and therefore, they share what God has blessed them with. They share not only food, but their talents, and most of all, their love of God and His people. They provide an outlet for concerns to be voiced by the residents of Mt. Carmel House and have come to trust ministry members enough to readily receive hugs. In return for the food and fellowship, the residents participate by assisting in the cleaning of the kitchen
