| In the year of
our Lord, 1975, Rev. Ernest R. Gibson had an idea that First Rising Mt.
Zion Baptist Church should have a Senior Citizen’s Association.
He spoke to Rev. Lucy Davis, who at that time was a student in the Seminary.
She was in her senior year and needed a class project. Reverend Gibson
suggested the idea to her and she prayed over it deciding that she would
use it for her class project. She gathered with a small group of ladies
at First Rising Mt. Zion and other churches. The First Rising Mt. Zion
Baptist Church Senior Citizen’s Association was then organized
with Mrs. Myrtle Biscoe at its first President, and Rev. Lucy Davis as
Vice-President.
The purpose of the organization was for fellowship and friendship
among seniors. Rather than stay at home and watch TV, seniors would
learn arts and crafts and participate in other social and recreational
activities. Mrs. Biscoe served faithfully until she was called home
to be with the Lord. Rev. Davis was later chosen to be the next President
and she too was a tireless worker. Under Rev. Davis’ administration,
seniors learned quilting, doll making, pillow crafting and much, much
more. When Rev. Davis became ill and could no longer serve, the Association
experienced a period of inactivity.
In September 1987, Mrs. Irene Brooks and Mrs. Edith Cottom reorganized
the Association with the permission of Pastor Gibson. The first meeting
was held September 28, 1987 in the Gibson Plaza Social Room. Later
meetings were held in the Founder’s Education Building. Mrs.
Cottom was elected President and Mrs. Lila Poindexter, Vice-President.
Meetings were held on Mondays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and the Association
grew tremendously under Mrs. Cottom’s direction. When Mrs. Cottom
became ill, Mrs. Pointdexter assumed the leadership role and later
became President when the Lord called Mrs. Cottom home. In 1982, Mrs.
Irene Brooks was elected President and continues to serve today. Under
our current Pastor, Raymond C. Bell, the Senior Citizen Association
has now become the Senior Citizen Ministry.
Over the years the Senior Citizens have contributed to the Church
Building Fund and the Table and Piano Projects. Monetary presentations
are made to the church during Revival and the church anniversary. The
group’s fellowship includes shopping trips, dinner theater, movies,
luncheons and museum visiting the sick. At the present, there are seventeen
members. Meetings are held every 2nd and 4th Tuesday except holidays
and when there is inclement weather during the winter months.
